Ben NunanBEN NUNAN
'2010 BIG GUN'

Congratulations to Ben Nunan who produced a super-human effort to win the inaugural 'Big Guns' tournament.
Ben was forced to come from the losers side after he was eliminated by Joel Younger in the semi final of the winners side.
Ben then went on to defeat Victoria's Jake McCartney, Queenslander Adam List and then got his revenge against Gold Coast local Joel Younger.... and don't forget, all these games happened on the Sunday!!!
Then, he had to go into the Grand Final and take on the Red Hot West Australian, Ron Kelly who had played excellent pool all weekend.
Because Ban came from the losers side, that meant he had to defeat Ronny twice (over 21 frames).
For those in attendance, they were treated to some of the best pool played by anybody, anywhere. Benny Nunan dismantled Ronny in the first final, hardly missing a shot and giving Ronny very little, if any opportunity... but the best was yet to come.
The final match of the tournament was going te be the best, Ronny gathered his thoughts and regained his composure and came back at Benny in the second best of 21. Both players were fighting very hard to capture the $10,000 first prize. After almost 40 hours of pool and hundreds and hundreds of frames over the weekend, it came down to the final frame of the tournament to determine the champion. At 10-10, Benny walked to the table, smashed open the balls, and that was it... good night nurse... Benny cleared the table and was declared the champion.
Well done to Ron Kelly, who played some of the best pool of his career this weekend, and he believes he still is not quite back to his best, so look out for next time.
This grand final has been rated one of the best of all time. We are privileged that the whole grand final has been captured by William from Ballstream.com and can't wait till the DVD is ready so we can watch it all again.

1st: Ben Nunan ($10,000)

Important Tournament Notes:

1. 0 The tournament director reserves the right to change what the matches will be played
‘Best of’ if it is believed the tournament will not finish in the allotted time frame.

2.0  If a match enters a third hour (over two hours); a timer may be appointed to the table.

3.0  If players are taking too long to play shots, his opponent should request a timer.

4.0  All players are expected to dress in smart casual clothing. Come on guys… dress smart!

5. 0 Due to matches on the Sunday being filmed, it is a request that players involved in finals
dress appropriately. “You’re going to be on TV… remember to look nice!!!”

6.0    Players that are deemed not to be playing in the ‘Spirit of the game’ may be exposed to;

6.1 - First offence is a ‘Yellow Card’ – This offence will result in the loss of frame.

6.2 - Second offence is a ‘Red Card’ – This offence will result in the loss of match.

7.0    The tournament director can eject any player from the tournament if it is deemed that he is/has jeopardized the tournament in any way. That player will be removed from the competition and may be asked to leave the premises.

8.0    It is the responsibility of the players to call an adjudicator in to view a close or important shot. Remember, an adjudicator cannot rule on an alleged foul that has not been witnessed.

'Big Guns' Update:

At this stage, we have 27 players in total (Pro's, Intermediates and amateurs)
Unfortunately, Steve Woods has pulled out to unavoidable work committments.
The advertised minimum prize money has not been affected by this withdrawal.
It is looking very likely that the 32 spots will be filled.
If you are thinking about playing, don't delay, nominate now!!!
Once I have 32 players... Entries will be closed!!!

*** IMPORTANT TOURNAMENT NOTES ***

Due to this being the first 'Big Guns' tournament that I have organised, and there is big money involved, there have been decisions made 'on the run' to try and ensure a successful tournament.
I trust everyone can understand that I have tried to accomodate everybody the best I can.

I would like everybody to be aware of the following;

* WA Players Rebate:
The four WA pro's that are coming over from Perth will receive an airfare rebate.
The 'Big Guns' tournament will pay a rebate for evey dollar over $300 that has been spent on airfares up to $200.
This means if the airfare costs $450, then the rebate will be $150.
However if the airfare costs $600, then the rebate has been capped at $200 only.
This rebate will not in any way have any impact on the advertised prize money.
(Note) This rebate only gets paid if a player does not receive any prize money.

* Best Amateur
If the remainder of the spots get filled with amateurs, we will be offering a 'Best Amateur' cash prize.
The amount will be decided just prior to the tournament starting.
This amateur prize will not in any way have any impact on the advertised prize money.

* Intermediate Players
Some players that heve been deemed 'not quite' pro or 'too good' for amateur have been offered 'Intermediate' spots at $500.
Thus far, those player offered 'Intermediate' spots have not made a decision.
Intermediate players will not be eligable for the 'Best Amateur' prize money. (If any)

* Prize Money
At this stage we have 16 pro players. So the minimum prize money stated at the start still applies.
1st: $10,000
2nd: $4,000
3rd: $1,000
4th: $1,000

Note: Once rebates, expenses and admin have been deducted, all remaining monies will be included into the prize money. This figure will not be known until the Sunday of the tournament.
No money will be left in the bank once this event has concluded.
As you have all trusted me with your nomination money, I would think that you all trust that I will distribute the monies honestly and truly.

Travis Crawley
Tournament Director.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

A tournament is being arranged to sort out who really is Australia's best pool player.
Organisers are looking for 16 players to participate in this exclusive event.
This event will be hosted on the Gold Coast with the local association expressing keen interest in hosting. Local sponsorship is being sought to help boost prize money.
Entry fee will be $1000 per player. This will be a double elimination tournament with all matches best of 21 frames.
Tournament date is being confirmed, but early to mid next year is the target.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
For any player that is interested, please flag your interest by sending me an email on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Big Guns Comment:
A relatively unknown player that just breezed into town. He has picked up the odd title here and there, and may fancy himself to win a few games in this tournament.
I don't think we can expect him to wear that red jacket during the comp, as apparently he was forced to burn it when pulled over by the fashion police.
I think he escaped with a warning and was asked not to dress himself ever again.
A red hot chance to be the 2010 Big Gun.
I have him at $7.50 to win... he has got himself at even money!

This galloper only knows one speed... FLAT OUT!!!!!
Young Dela has an eye like a lazor and shoots just as straight.
His cueing style resebles a drunk frog in a slowly moving blender but gee is it effective.
A champion player with only one outcome in mind... VICTORY!
One of the genuine top chances in this comp... at $6.50, we are keeping him safe.

The list is far too long!

Big Guns Comment:
Where does one begin!!!
Widely regarded as Australia's best ever pool player, Alec has done it all.
He has dominated the sport from the early 90's and has continued to be a major threat in any tournament.
The list of achievements will only embarass us all, so I will not mention them.
Does tend to be a lot grumpier these days, but still shoots a good stick!
He makes no secret who he would like to avoid in this tournament... He says that Travis Crawley is like a gun that never runs out of bullets. He would be happy to be in seperate halves when the draw gets done.
Alec rates very highly in the market. At $9.50, your money will be alive for a long time.

Hmmm, Alan Brown!
What to say........
Can he play... Yes! For sure.
Can he win... If at his best, he can certainly put himself in some handy situations.
A rock solid player under pressure and has been the 'Go-To' man for WA at big moments at national titles.
He tells me that since his, 'bogey man', Stevie Woods withdrew, he has felt a lot better about his chances.
We believe that he needs to be at his best to push into the money positions.
At $17.00 to win the tournament, he will give a bold showing.

Big Guns Comment:
Now this guy CAN PLAY!!!
Before his self imposed spell from the game, Ron Kelly was establishing himself as the Australia's top player and nobody could stop him.
He now finds himself in the position of re-proving himself. But, for the people in 'the know', that is not required, as we all know, Ronny could split this field in half if he finds his old form. A very entertaining player to watch... a big gun from the west looking to take home some big cash!!
At the single figure odds of $9.00, we believe Ronny will be still flying the flag well into the Sunday!

The shinning light of WA 8-Ball. Two time (and current) Australian Singles Champion, and has won a thousand junior national titles and a million state comps and local comps.
In a poll at the 2009 Nationals, the nations top womens players voted Justin as the 2nd hottest male player in Australian 8-Ball. He just missed out by a few votes and was defeated by South Australia's Jack Hunter.
Justin has the goods to be the 2010 Big Guns champion. At $7.50, he's a big chance.

I think at $17.00, Paul may be some value if he gets some luck early.

Johl started playing pool as a young child, and at age 12, he was a star Aussie rules footballer, and junior Motorcross champion. He was forced to choose between his three favorite sports at a young age, and his love of pool took over as his number one interest. So he embarked on a professional cue-sport career. Johl became Australian junior 8-ball, 9-ball and Snooker Champion a few years later. He then went on to become a professional Snooker player for 7 years. Johl later turned his hand at 9-ball and he became the best Australian player, winning the Australian 8-ball and 9-ball champs. Later in Australia, he earned a spot in the World 9-ball in Cardiff, Wales and was and was narrowly defeated, by a 13-11 score line. Johl developed a growing frustration with cue-sports in general, with the prize money that was constantly decreasing in the UK. With Snooker also loosing major sponsors, Johl was forced to quit playing professional cue-sports. He now co-owns two different highly successful businesses in Surfer’s Paradise, Australia, the tourist capital of Australia. After hearing of the exciting new International Pool Tour, he could not wait to get back into the game, and Johl is counting the days to set foot in Las Vegas to take on the best players in the world!

Big Guns Comment:
A true world class performer. This guy just oozes talent. If Johl took this game seriously, he would be a seriously tough player to beat and would certainly cause many headaches at a world championships.
Even with half a preperation, Johl is playing to win and he will be someone most will be looking to avoid.
I have him at a $6.50 second favourite to win. No suprises if he ends up with the cash!

Althouth not considered one of the finest potters in the field, Justin's unorthadox game makes opponents uncomfortable and his ability to win games from knowhere is uncanny.
If Justin settles early, he will be difficult to remove.
However, Big Guns believes becasue he is untested over this distance against this quality field, Justin may struggle in latter rounds. At $17 to win, he may be value.

The Big Guns have learned that Snooker World is where Brent gets all his mail posted too. Apparently he resides under table seven!
Talk about Home Ground Advantage!!!!
Brent will be looking to use his local knowledge to give himself the edge when things get tight. A good player that just lives and breathes pool. This will be a good hit-out for Brent as he is off to England to play in the World Championships in June.
Big Guns is thinking about hiring a full time umpire to follow Brent around for his games... many people have suggested, he plays that slow, he should have started on Wednesday.
A little bit of value at $21.00 to win the title.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I know very little about Mr. Rob Munster apart from the fact he knocked off a very handy North Queensland field to claim a spot in the 'Big Guns' field.

The Ballarat youngster is backing his ability and is looking to 'tear it up' ths weekend!!
A very capable player with a mountain of skill and ability.
His capability is unquestioned... he strolls into the Victorian state team every year and is very tough to knock over at nationals.
With his 'Trade Mark' hair style, Jake will be looking to leave a big impression on a few of the more experienced players when the whips start cracking.

Damo can handle himself quite well on the pool table, although, the best of 21 may be a big test his long range fuel tank when he is deep into a big match.
